Graduation time is here, many high school students will look towards the future and begin their journey into the “real” world. But what does the future actually hold for us, cell phone wise?

Long, Long Ago…

Just a few weeks ago, the 40th anniversary of the first cell phone call was celebrated. Through those 40 years, many changes have shaped the cellular world as we know it. Think about it…the original phones were enormous and could provide about 10 minutes of talk time.

Phones have evolved and the shape, size, and aesthetics have changed significantly too. They were large, then the phones got extremely small (remember the peanut-sized phones?), then they got larger but thinner, and even larger still.

Today

…we enjoy phones that can text, surf the internet, and manage our e-mail accounts all on the go; we even enjoy video chats while out and about in the world. With all that has gone on, it is hard to imagine what is coming next, but we have a crystal ball!

What About Tomorrow?

As we saw at CES, Samsung is already developing a bendable cell phone screen. Sure, it’s not ready to go to market just yet, but seeing it at recent shows gives us a glimpse into the future of our cellular “college life”. Maybe by the time these kids graduate college, we will have touchscreen phones that you can just fold up small for a pocket (déjà vu?).

Siri and other personal assistants hint to a world that will provide instant help in all areas of a person’s life, directly in their pocket. Phones will become smarter and smarter, providing and completing many of our most mundane tasks, like algebra.

Congrats Grads!

What the future will hold, for those graduating and everyone else, is something that we can’t know right now, but many of the big companies like Motorola, Samsung and Apple are banking on cell phone technology to continue evolving. Time will only tell.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner (May 12th for those keeping score at home), and mom needs to have her phone protected too; and it still needs to look good. The beauty of an uncased iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy S4 is truly something to behold. While we love the look of these sleek phones, they can’t be carried around on a day-to-day basis like that, especially with kids in tow. It simply isn’t safe to keep your phone out of case, especially if you plan on trading it when the newest phone model hits the sales floor. This case is like the military tank of cell phone cases. It is currently available for the iPhone 5 and the S3, not quite yet for the S4.

Another favorite on our list is the Incipio DualPro Case. This case is pretty cool, its a slim 3mm thick, but features shock absorption silicone and creates a rim around the phone to keep the screen from scratches in case of drops; the case also comes with a screen protector. Ridges around the edge make it really easy to grip, too. Currently there is a huge selection of phone models all the way up to the S4 and the iPhone 5, so there is no reason to go without a case.

Griffin, Speck and many other manufacturers also make cases for the newest smartphones. Many of them are great cases that offer plenty of protection for the average user and the busy mom. The three we picked, however, are intended for heavy duty protection and also look great. If you consider yourself a real butterfingers, or you have active little ones, one of these cases should be on your cell phone accessories list.

2013 is the year to keep your eyes on cell phone news. New technological developments and seriously impressive showings at the Consumer Electronics Show a couple of months ago, point to some impressive new phones dropping onto the scene in the next 12 months. Many of the newest phones planned for this year are focusing on greater screen resolutions and faster speeds! We’ve plucked a few of our favorites from the rumored and confirmed phones for 2013.

G’Day Mate

If the huge display of the Samsung Note 2 caught your heart in 2012, you might want to keep your eyes peeled in 2013 for the Hauwei Ascend Mate, a behemoth phone by a little known manufacturer. The Ascend Mate, which will drop sometime in 2013 will offer a massive, 6.1 inch screen that displays in full 1080p. The phone will also come equipped with a quad processor, an 8MP camera, and it will all be running off of Android’s much loved Jelly Bean OS.

Awesome to the Maxx

Motorola has remained shrouded in mystery in the last 6 months, but there is a rumor that the next big phone from the manufacturer will be a close collaboration with Google. The phone, which should look similar to the Razr Maxx will be offering the fastest speeds on a phone yet, a seamless integration of Android’s upcoming OS, and it should offer an impressive battery life. Little is known about this phone, just yet, but that should all change in May, when the phone is rumored to be unveiled. Keep your eyes on conferences for more information about this upcoming device.

iWhichnumberareweon?

Any article about upcoming phones would be lacking if it didn’t include the latest rumors about Apple’s newest incarnation of the iPhone. The masses should expect an iPhone 5S to drop sometimes in the third quarter, if history plans to repeat itself again. There are also rumors that an iPhone Plus might be making it onto the scene; the plus is rumored to be a larger iPhone that could go up against the Note 2 and other larger display phones. Time will only tell. As we all know, Apple is notorious for staying mum on such developments until they want the public to know about it.

As a cellphone junkie, my news feed on social media sites is packed with like-minded people. The people in the know that clutter my news feeds with information on handsets and phone accessories, were abuzz just a few days ago, as demos of Blackberry’s newest phones rolled into stores and phone outfitters.

The Reception

From my small sampling, has been lukewarm, at best. That comes as no surprise, Blackberry has struggled for several years to remain current and offer cell phones that fit the needs of today’s cellphone market.

What exactly happened to Blackberry and others?

The answer isn’t as simple as you might think; mostly, due to the fact that Blackberry hadn’t launched a change in many years. Their phones, while business-minded, lacked the pizzazz and personality that people look for in a cell phone these days.

Sure, they worked, most of the time, but they offered little else. Blackberry failed to realize that the cell phone, in recent years, has become an extension of the person holding it. Five new handsets that look identical to every other handset produced by the company is not going to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy, that is for sure.

Where Are They Now?

Blackberry is a former giant who has been relegated to the “toss” pile by many of the young and hip cell phone users in the world, but they aren’t the only ones; Nokia has suffered a similar fate. Nokia, in the early 2000′s was the phone manufacturing company that sat on top of all other manufacturers. They were beloved for their designs and personality, but Nokia lost market shares when they refused to change things up and offer users something different.

Sure, Blackberry and Nokia are both trying, now, to change things up and offer better products; but for many converts the changes are too little, and far too late.
